27_196 Hotel Oakland ---------- The dinner was excellent, the speeches were satisfactory and our guests seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. Only one incident marred the occasion. As I was rising to call on Dr. Barrows to speak for the University of California Mrs. Lemmon, who had not been invited to the dinner but came anyway, rose, interrupted the toastmaster (I was presiding) and asked to speak. Without waiting for permission she ran on a moment or so and then asked to be introduced. I simply spoke her name and inclined my head and lest I should say more or head her off she ran on volubly about herself and Mr. Lemmon, giving |
