The dinner was excellent, the speeches were satisfactory and our guests seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. Only one incident marred the occasion. As I was rising to call on Dr. Barrows to speak for the University of California Mrs. Lemmon, who had not been invited to the dinner but came anyway, rose, interrupted the toastmaster (I was presiding) and asked to speak. Without waiting for permission she ran on a moment or so and then asked to be introduced. I simply spoke her name and inclined my head and lest I should say more or head her off she ran on volubly about herself and Mr. Lemmon, giving

their whole history, it seemed. But it seemed longer than it was and she finally gave up the floor and sat down. The Lemmons have always featured themselves botanically on all occasions and Mrs. L. felt that she must represent Mr. Lemmon, speak for him and say a word for a great name which had never received recognition. After this I called on Barrows and then followed Cowles, Tuboef and Engler in succession. After Engler the dinner party rose and drank Engler's health.
