Wawona, Big Trees,

the high forest, stopped the stages as we pleased to botanize, having two vehicles at our command and arrived at Wawona at 7.15 about. Spent the night and the next (Tues) morning went by stage to the Mariposa Grove. Had about four hours in the grove, mostly about the Big Tree Cabin. The great trees delighted the party and they returned to the hotel in great contentment. The next morning, Wednesday, September 10, we drove to Glacier Point. Some of the party left here, going back to S.F., The Brockmans and Paulsen, whilst Tuboef went back to El Portal to Study the foothill conifers.

The ascent of the stages to the level of the Red Fir, Abies magnifica, aroused once more the somewhat jaded spirits of the party and the new flora which came in with the Red Fir now held their attention and interest. We lunched on the road at a pretty place, in the neighborhood of Peregoy Mdw., or at least not so far from it.
The party collected, took photographs and studied the composition of the meadow. The most zealous collector is Schroter; Engler also collects a great deal. Cowles does not collect at all, Clements collects scraps and
