27_186 Berkeley ---------- - Prunus in the Berkeley and Oakland Hills. Under my direction H.H. Haworth Bot. 104 has listed locs. for two species: P. emarginata: cool canons of the Berkeley Hills, 500 ft. elev. where there is plenty of moisture; stream bank Strawberry Canon, well developed; Shepherd's Canon south wall; Glory Hole Canon; Redwood Peak. [In Telegraph Canon occurs in thickets on shoulders low down south side, half way up.] P. demissa: north end of Palo Colorado ridge, almost on top and over-looking the Snake Road where it starts down into San Leandro Canon above the O.A. & E. tunnel. 27_187 1917. ----- the top of the ridge and extends some distance down the slope. The larger individuals are in the damper places lower on the slope. - Dirca occidentalis. Average height = 6 ft., max. of 10 ft. in Glory Hole Canon (3 1/2 in. diam. trunk at base). Restricted and localized distribution: n. slopes cool & well-watered canons Occurs in dense thickets of its own, or an individual here and there in other thickets, but always on n. slope of a canon. As a rule direct light not intense. Strawberry Canon, scattered individuals Shepherd's Canon, " " Ridges about O.A. & E. tunnel. Redwood Peak, thicket on n.e. side.
