27_184 Berkeley ---------- all or essentially all are pediceled. This thing seems to grade into true E. exaltatum in S. Calif. It may be possible to distinguish these two forms but I doubt it. Still, the Bay region thing is in appearance different and my plants of it from the Santa Cruz Mts. are quite branched and not strict as in the typical Cal. desert form from Owens Lake. This Bay region plant may possibly be the true E. muhlenbergii. -- W.L.J. June 11, 1917. 27_185 1917 ----- obtusish broadly oblong leaves -- rather alike in respect to foliage, inflorescence & flowers. -- I now decide that all the South Coast Range plants are one thing and not specifically separable from the S. Cal. E. exaltata. It is still possible that the Bay region & S. Coast Range thing is true Muhlenbergii but it could not be separated specifically from the S. Cal. plant. Indeed some of Chandler's plants may be compared with Parish Furnace Creek and the flowers will be found the same size and alike otherwise. This Coast Range thing seems to have a more fan-shaped stigma. Prob. this is not important. The small West Berkeley plants etc may represent merely an early stage -- June 12, 1917. |
