27_170 Berkeley ---------- where the trunk forks into 3 prongs, is 12 in. in longest diameter and 2 1/2 or 3 in. in shortest diameters. The bark is reddish brown, superficially checked into irregularly oblong scales 1/2 to 1 inch long which gradually exfoliate. -- Dec. 2, 1913. ---------- "I own 381 acres of rich land on Ben Lomond but am confronted with 100 or more acres of very thick, strong and vigorous White Thorn trees or bushes. Has any means been discovered to destroy this other than to grub it up?" |

One of the first things to come in on Redwood cut-over lands and the most abundant. Associated with it are Vaccinium ovatum, & Myrica californica. Under this nurse the Redwood forest gradually comes back. In a mature Redwood forest there is no Ceanothus |
