27_152 Berkeley ---------- - Sargent. cont. from p. 151. commented on the strange manner of life of the Brandegees, their daily habits, coming to S.F. each day for their dinner, living in mean rooms and really having no home. Sargent thinks Salix nigra does not grow in Cal. since he makes the Texano-Mexican tree to be S. wrightii and real S. nigra ends with the Mississipii River. I think this must be a case of fine splitting. Miss Eastwood says A.A. 27_153 Aug. 1913 ---------- near Oroville. She could not tell me if he intended to quit botany but he cannot well do botanical work without his herbarium. The life of a University is evidently killing to a man of Heller's instincts for he has tried at least three colleges. - R. Hopping says: "I have just seen Ceanothus fresnensis. It is absolutely distinct from C. cuneatus which has cream-col. fls. & this has blue flowers. Its leaves are minute; its limbs are very heavy. One would expect slender limbs with minute leaves. It is lower in habit than C. cordulatus and grows with it. That is C. fresnensis grows high above C. cuneatus. I have seen a Sequoia giganteum trunk so rotted by fungus that it shattered all to pieces |
