27_124 Berkeley ---------- - S.B. Parish developed his interest in plants from his brother W.F. Parish who had no scientific interest in plants but loved to cultivate and to admire. Parish was very much interested in getting his plants named but had no books and knew no botanists. Along came Lemmon who said it was customary to enclose a fee of 50 cents for naming a plant. Parish did not warm to this but finally heard of Dr. Parry who was then stopping at Crafton, a small place at the eastern end of the San Bernardino Valley. Parry gave him an introduction to the native plants and Parish at once learned that there were other kinds of botanists than those who charged fifty cents per determination" -- Told me by S.B. Pets Stamens Stigmas Lewisia cotylendon 8 7 3 Smooth-edged leaves. 9 7 3 L'ves obovate-oblanceolate, long. 9 6 2 Bracts ovate, acute. 8 6 2 Lewisia purdyi 8 7 3 Like preceding but l'ves orbicular- 9 7 3 oblanceolate, short. Bracts 9 7 3 elliptic, obtuse. 9 7 3 Lewisia howellii 8 7 3 Leaves with crisped narrowly 9 6 3 membranous edges. 8 6 2 There are as seen, three leaf forms but the flowers do not differ in any detail of structure and they look alike altho there may be a shade of difference in color.
