27_120 Berkeley ---------- - Lemmon, Mrs. J.G. Her struggle with Colonel A. Andrews in the matter of the New Orleans Cotton Exposition was fully exploited in the newspapers of the time. See letter of Colonel Andrews in the San Francisco Examiner, Feb. 28 of Vol. 48. In that letter are quoted letters from Julia Ward Howe -- "I found her a very troublesome person to deal with" -- New York, 8 Feb., 1886 -- and from Isabel Greeley -- "I found her a troublesome and designing person and avoided as much as possible any relations or words with her" -- Claremont, N.H. 13 Feb. 1886. Under date of Mar. 17, 1889, "Mrs. Lemmon Vindicated" appeared in some daily paper |
27_121 28 May 1913 ---------- about the Bay. Signed: Mrs. J.G. Lemmon [!!!]. -- [Taken from S.B. Parish's newspaper clippings.] - Grant, Geo. B. Has left Pasadena, given up his winter home and returned east. Gave all his western plants to Parish. Was a prodigious collector and had 40 or 50 duplicates of various species, sometimes of very common ones. Gave a lot of his pamphlets to Parish. He is a man of considerable means. He had never met Parish. His business had to do with the manufacture of a certain kind of machinery; it had been developed into such shape that it required his attention only a month a year. |
