No. 5603. Cryptanthe [muricata var. jonesii] Waterman Canon No. 5604. Oenothera bistorta Nutt. San B. valley, east end. No. 5605. [Opuntia parryi Engelm.] Cactus. 3 ft. h. Mesas. -- San B. - Clematis ligusticifolia (5 leaflets!) I never saw such vines elsewhere as in Mill Creek Canon. They ran up Alder trees (Alnus rhombifolia) to a height of 40 to 50 feet! and riotously. Lots of them!! One of the cables measured 12 inches in circumference with a tape! I was reminded of Vitis californica in northern canons. |
27_109 15-23 May 1913. [SW San Bernardino Co.] ---------- Shrubs in San Bernardino Mts., Mill Creek Forest Home about 5000 ft. Snow Creek, 6500 ft. Mouth of Mill Creek at valley floor = 2000 ft Three most important species_ Ceanothus divaricatus Quercus dumosa Quercus wislizenii var. frutescens - White & Black Sage in the Chaparral. - Yucca whipplei - Adenostoma fasciculatum forms a broad band below the three first mentioned. - Ceanothus integerrimus, occurs at the higher altitudes. - Cercocarpus ledifolius, small shrubs in Snow Canon. - Castanopsis sempervirens, on the upper slopes, abundant. ---------- - Snow drifts in Snow Canon, perhaps 20 feet deep now. - Sarcodes sanguinea, in fl! - Pinus coulteri, 10 ft. 6 in. circ. at 4 ft. 50 ft. h! ---------- - Took this trip with Parish in his cart drawn by "Flora", fat, rather lazy and very windy.
