26_58 Colorado River 425 ft. ---------- a team and chain to the base of it and "yanking" it right out. - Left settler's landing at Chemuevis Valley at 10:20 am. - Ferguson is the name of the head man at the Government Dam at Laguna. - Hall's Landing. Hall has been here 36 years. He says coyotes, bobcats and skunks are "thick and fat." They feed on the sweet mesquite pods as do also the quail. Hall calls Mellen by the name of Topock (Topagh?). He has lived here 36 years; built his adobe house in 1884. The house is made of willow trunk |
26_59 24 Oct. 1912 ---------- standards, willow branch lath nailed on round, and plastered with mud. The roof is similar but the "lath" is covered with canvas, then "tule", then mud. - Burro, the poor man's auto in the desert. It lives on Atriplex and related shrubs. These form its gasoline. - The current carries along as in a mill race. The river stretches straight far ahead bordered by a bank of Black Willow (Salix nigra). On the high-banked opposite shore are Indians sitting beneath the trees_ near their dwellings. The sun drenches the whole world from a fleckless sky. Purple and drab-colored mountains stretch to right & left. Behind, far, are the Needles; ahead straight the Whipple Mts. _Cottonwood & Willow, like a Corot picture |
