Chemhuevis Valley, Colorado River. 425 ft.

(= San Bernardino Co. when in Cal. Mohave Co. in Arizona)
- Spirostachys occidentalis. Fine formation of it on alkali river flat at or a little below Blankenship Valley, Ariz. shore. Picture taken by Rennie of a bush 5 ft.h. & 8 ft. diam. Many-stemmed from base, the stems 1 or 2 in. diam at 1 ft. New shoots rise up in centre & flower first season, their next season bend over & flower again, the long branches finally with ends sprawling on ground, as if heavily loaded. The wood is very brittle, both young and old stems 1 in. diam. In the photo also show Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora) killed by miseltoe and Atriplex lentiformis.

[truxillensis HBK] Corolla dull white, the ovate acute lobes with pink tips; stamens 5, alt. with cor. lobes, included (1/2 as long as tube); ovary seated on yellowish flat disk or flat torus, very long hairy; styles 2. Sepals distinct, overlapping strongly, concave inside. (Just below Blankenship Valley on Ariz. shore, i.e. part of the Great Chemehuevis Valley.) See p. 149.
No. 5207. Aster spinosus Gray acc. SBP. Switch plant. Rays 26. Comp._ 3 ft. h. & 3 or 4 ft. broad. Rays white, 1 1/2 lines long.
No. 5208. Salix [fluviatilis?] exigua Nutt. See p. 137. Gray willow 8 to 10 ft. h. Becomes 20 ft. h! See p. 80. See p. 137. See p. 163.
- Larrea mexicana. In this country and in the Chuckawalla this species is called Greasewood. The Greasewood of this country is universally Larrea. In the Chuckawalla they clear the land of it by hitching
