26_4 Saratoga, California -- 600 ft. - Mentzelia laevicaulis, very fragrant, esp. at night, says W.F. Bade'. Bade' says the flowers open up more at night! - Shrubs of Cal. = Thickets along Saratoga Ck = Rosa Californica, Symphoricarpos racemosus, Rubus vitifolius C. & S., Rhus diversiloba. - Went up Saratoga Creek with Miss Rowena Beans in her machine from "Wildflower Hill" where I am staying. Along the creek Cornus glabrata, No. 5161, grows in abundance, forming quite a thicket along the road in the canon. I was astonished at the size of the individuals, fully 18 ft. h. and perhaps 22 ft. h. The trunks were very slender, |
26_5 August 16, 1912. [Santa Clara Co.] unbranched to 10 or 12 ft., about the same diam. all the way up. The diam is about 2 1/2 inches, maybe 3 in. at ground. This tall stem or trunk bore a rather narrow crown whose branchlets usually had a tendency to droop. Sometimes these branchlets became very long and cord-like, in some cases reaching the ground and taking root!! These long pendulous cords had only few and short branchlets at intervals. See below. No. 5160. Polygala californica Nutt. fruits. Shade woods. No. 5161. Cornus glabrata Benth. See p. 4. Drooping or pendulous cord-like branch taken, 16 ft. 7 in. long! about 3 or 4 ft. of it trailing on ground. No. 5162. Baccharis Milpitas -- 4 ft. h. ---------- - Teratology. Solanum umbelliferum.
