26_2 Saratoga, Santa Clara Co 600 ft. alt. No. 5156. Ammi majus L. 4 in. to 2 3/4 ft. high. Mostly simple and with one terminal umbel; only the larger plants branching at top, then mostly 3-umbeled. Bracts 14; conspicuously reflexed! or reflexed spreading, better! Bractlets 12 to 14, also reflexed-spreading. but not so strongly nor so conspicuously. -- The description in 2nd Ed. Fl. W. Mid. Cal. badly in need rev. and rather mixed. Leaf-segments not laciniate or toothed, not spatulate, but entire and linear or subulate. Bracts were better described as reflexed; bractlets as reflexed-spreading. [But 5156 = Ammi visnaga Lam.! -- W.L.J. in 1920.] No. 5157. Aphyllon comosum Gray. |
26_3 August. 16, 1912. corolla dull white, pink-tinged & -veined. Upper lip erect, notched, rather deeply; lower lip deeply parted into broadly lanceolate lobes. Between the lobes of lower lip two folds, very marked and the fold in relief on the lower side, the fold so folded as to be really tubular with the "mouth" or "opening" of the tube appearing on lower side of throat or palate. Stamens 4, lower pair slightly longer. Anthers woolly. Stigmas 2, large, resembling strongly stigmas Diplacus glutinosus. Sepals linear-lanceolate, nearly distinct! but obviously united -- On Rubus vitifolius. No. 5158. Cnicus. 6 ft. h. [Cirsium coulteri] No. 5159. Symphoricarpus racem. Leaf variation. |
