26_22 Mohave Desert, Barstow 2100 ft No. 5166. Chrysothamnus [Gutierrezia microcephala (DC.) Gray] Plants height shown by spm. Bushy form. Heads of 2 fls only, one disk! and one ray! Styles long-cylindric, short hairy with spreading hairs. Wash. No. 5167. Sphaeralcea ambigua Gray Many such stems from the base. It is a switch plant at this season. Wash. No. 5168. [Lepidospartum squamatum (Gray) Gray] Green Composite. Shrub 6 ft. h, many stemmed & freely branched. Remarkable for its green leafless twigs and its cedar-like aspect. Wash. No. 5169. Chrysothamnus [nauseosus var. gnaphalodes (Greene) Hall] Gray or whitish composite. Fls: 4 or 5, much exserted beyond involucre, spreading or rather diverging 3-4 ft. h. Wash! |
26_23 Oct. 19, 1912 - Miss Waterman of the Waterman Ranch is trying to buy a portion of the river bottom lying south of hers which contains a fine mesquite grove. Its value would be for wood but also and principally as browse-pasturage for her cattle. I have been out driving with her on the mesa behind the flocks [?] and it is a fine thing to come down into the mesquite. I remarked: "The mesquite is your forest. It is the forest of the desert." ---------- No. 5170. Atriplex confertifolia. Fruiting heavily now, the little round shrubs 1 to 2 ft. high covered with the fruiting spikes |
