26_178 Berkeley ---------- - Greene, E.L. Carl Purdy says: "I would not accept a species because it was Greene's and I would not reject it because it was Greene's. He has on the whole done more harm to Cal. botany than if he had let it alone. He compares a new species, not with its nearest ally, but with one not at all near it. A new species ought to be compared with its nearest ally so one could be helped to form a mental picture of it." -- The above judgement is interesting because it is sincere and clear and agrees essentially with my own except I minimize the harm done. Doubtless Greene has forced on others re-examination of material too carlessly passed over. - Corylus rostrata, not in Santa Lucias acc. H.A. Greene. |
26_179 18 January 1913 ---------- - Verbena canescens. "Southern border of Cal." in Syn. Fl. means northern Lower Cal. See Bot. Cal. where quoted as "Canon Tantillas" [?] in Lower Cal. V. ciliata is in similar case with ref. to both above texts. Of neither have we spms. from Cal. - Verbena polystachya. We have no spms. from Cal. unless Brandegee's June 1894 San Diego be it. The things from S. Cal called polystachya seem to be urticifolius. - Verbena officinalis. We have no spms from Cal. - Polanisia trachysperma. None in hb. from Cal nor indeed any species of the genus. - Cassia covesii. None from Cal. in hb. - Kellogg, Dr. A. His spiritual nature. See sub. Ceanothus papillosum in Jepson "Kew Types" [?]. |
