- Verbena bipinnatifida Nutt. Providence Mts., Brandegee. I cannot distinguish V. ciliata Benth. from this using Brandegee's Agua Dulce, Lower Cal. for comparison as well as other spms. The nutlets and the figuring of their scars is the same. Latter has as a rule less divided leaves, a better char. than any other I know. Gray says former perennial and latter annual but these things are so commonly in fl. first year that this point is dubious. In the most marked form of V. ciliata the leaves are not divided at all but only coarsely toothed. Verbena cont. See p. 179

- Climate. December a beautiful month, clear and dry. Jan 2, 3, 4, 5 north wind, very cold, esp. 3 & 4. Lowest records in most parts of state. Freezing up general and unlike anything seen in a long time. Icicles general in Great Valley. Water frozen on fireman's coats in fighting fire in Berkeley Sunday night. See p. 196. Since the 6th more or less rain, esp. Jan 15, 16, 17, 18. In Great Valley windmills sheathed in icicles in great freeze.
- Cheopodium californicum in S. Cal. Especially in arroyo beds, swales in the hills also; where there is moisture. H.M. Hall.
- Verbena polystachya HBK. S. Ca. acc. Gray; also Abrams. No genuine in U.C. hb. Drawn up from Palmer's 339 Durango for Fl. Cal. Perhaps? San Diego, Brandegee. See hb. See p. 179.
