- Purdy (Carl) has just been in to scold me thoroughly about the Flora of California. He wants me to finish it up and present at once the known knowledge of the flora of California as a summary in my flora passed and revised under my critical experience and knowledge of 22 years work. The need of a comprehensive flora is so great that he objects to my research work just at this time. "You will add one per cent to the knowledge during the year. We want the 99 percent of knowledge that exists, right off". He is right and I should put aside my controlling desire to follow

up interesting research leads which is so delightful that it is almost a mad passion. He does not, of course, realize fully the magnitude of the job, but he is a helpful and friendly critic. He says E.J. Wickson, recently deposed as Director of the Coll. Agr., will get his deserts in the next generation and will be known, as he is now, The Father of Practical Agriculture in California." "He has done more than any ten men to diffuse knowledge of agriculture in a practical way amongst the people." Ryder asked about Burbank: Purdy put it in this way: "His true friends dare not tell the truth about him; his fool friends can't tell the truth about him and his enemies won't tell the truth about him. Wickson's estimates were just but he was forced to stop writing about him."
