26_152 Berkeley ---------- No. 5298a. Quercus wislizenii var. frutescens. On North slope, side-hill trail, about 300 or 400 yds. westerly from Sugar Loaf, Berkeley Hills. 23 Nov. - Adenostoma fasciculatum. Steepest slopes exposed to most direct rays of the sun; very abundant in the Sierra Nevada & in inner Coast Ranges. Comes right out to coast but mostly only in small patches. However it always occupies its favorite habitats, the very steep south slopes. It is in the Berkeley Hills in such places and often occurs as an essentially pure stand, as in south slope Skyline Ridge near Sugar Loaf. 26_153 23 Nov. 1912 ---------- rather impressive. The slope looked nearly vertical but is rather far from it surely if one were on the spot. No. 5299. See p. 194. - Fouquieria splendens, stamen counts: 16, 15, 17, 17, 15, 16. Hall, Coyote Canon, no. 2789. Ovary with 3 placentae intruded in cavity of ovary so as to make an ovary completely 3-celled at very base but only partially so above. - Lyon, W.S. cf. Bot. Gaz. 31:314. - Bebbia juncea. Argus Mts, Purpus 5357, bristles of pappus, 20, 20., as long_ as corolla. _ used by Greene as char. of var. aspersa but no dif. in the forms as to this. - Stamper has just been showing me some pieces of Cercocarpus parvifolius & ledifolius, one piece of " [parvifolius] Santa Cruz Mts & one " [ledifolius] Alpine Co. |
