26_134 Picacho to Purple Hills Pass ---------- No. 5293. Phragmites communis Trin. Canebrake. Comes in heavily and cominates the river shores as the Coyote_ Willow (no. 5208) did above. Fine stand of a mile of it, where we first meet it as a dominant plant. Have been seeing it in patches for several days -- as far back as Palo Verde Valley. Here it forms Canebrake Canon. - Spirostachys occidentalis, on Ariz. shore, 4 mi. below Picacho, 4 to 8 ft. h. - Chocolate Mts. are well named. They are very naked and of various shades of chocolate and red-brown. ---------- _ Plants neither in flower or fruit and merely used as a field designation. |
26_135 Imperial Co. 4 Nov. 1912 ---------- - We now come again into flat country below Canebrake Canon, a large valley lying off to the Arizona side. On its eastern border (or s.e.) it is bounded by a prominent range topped by 2 or 3 very prominent castle-like rocks of great size_, one being especially vast.__ - Cereus giganteus, on prom. rock___ sticking out into river about 12 mi below Picacho on Cal. side; also on mts. near river, Ariz. shore about 8 mi. below Picacho. ___ = ? Corner Rock _ Castle Dome range. __ Castle Dome. - We enter & pass through the Purple Hills Pass. |
