26_120 Lower Palo Verde Val., ---------- his appearance, at least at first glance, for an ignorant peon or low Mexican - Camped in a wash = "Swallownest Bend" acc. Miss Waterman [?] Lower Palo Verde Valley on the Arizona shore at 3:30. We traveled only 3 hours this afternoon but made rapid time. The wash is a fine camp spot, high and dry, and other camping parties have been here. It falls dark early and we turned on the electric light to put our beds down, that is set fire to a Smoke Bush. The fire flooded the arroyo with light and made its walls look very interesting. Got away into the stream next am at 8:45 |
26_121 c. 240 ft. 1 Nov. 1912 ---------- No. 5274. Brandegea bigelovii Cogn. Cucurbit in the washes. Corolla of the small male fls. white, 5-parted into ovate acute lobes. Ariz. Cibola. No. 5275. Palafoxia linearis. Composite. Corollas dull whitish, tubular, 1 1/2 ft. h., spreading expanding upward a little. Tuft of hair on back of each corolla lobe. Washes. Ariz. Heads as a whole a little pinkish. Pappus -- paleae 4, subulate, scarious margined, denticulate at tip, equalling cor. No. 5276. Bouteloa barbata Lag. Grass. Wash. Ariz. Cibola No. 5277. [Echinocereus engelmannii] Cactus. 7 long main spines with smaller shorter spines at base - Populus fremonti on the river flats. Rennie says all the large trees die when they reach a certain age. |
