- At Ehrenberg Ferry were three rather rough looking men, two of whom, Dale & Ward, owned the ferry. They looked as common and as ignorant as men of their station usually do. The older man, Dale, swore vulgarly at the cat and so on. Imagine then my suprise later in the evening to find that this man, living in a crude tent shack with dirt floor, was very well informed, had live and interesting ideas about world politics and especially the foreign relations of England and glibly quoting sayings of Lord Palmerston. This man! living in a remote desert under squalid conditions. The third man, Baggs, had

traveled widely as a miner in the west and was in certain respects remarkably well-informed. The outstanding fact is that these men read and revolve what they read. They have time to think, the city man has no time for thought. The republic is safe when the "plain people" are of this kind
- At Blythe I was introduced to Manuel Solano. He was dressed roughly and took us in to his squalid-looking adobe and showed us a hot-water furnace he was installing. The suprise came when he showed us a room he was building, in the Mission style. There were 5 arched windows on the south. On the east he decided to have a crescent moon window with a long curving arch. The
