26_106 Ehrenberg, Ariz., 270 ft. ---------- - Prosopis juliflora (glandulosa): -- Beggs says it flowers and fruits 2 or 3 times in a season. - Cereus giganteus, the young ferryman says this species is abundant in southern Nevada (Lincoln Co.). The tallest of the nearest cluster of 3, beyond the wash, = 20 ft. h. - Prosopis glandulosa, tree 6 ft 1 in. in diam. at 18 in., 18 ft. h. -- Palo Verde Valley. - Corona de Cristo, grows near La Paz. Baggs says it is a sign of water and nearly always get water by digging for it. [He sends me a spm. It is Dalea spinosa!!!] - Cereus giganteus, about Bisbee, Ariz. Beggs says 170 to 200 feet high, but admits this is mere guessing. See p. 109. |
26_107 31 Oct. 1912 ---------- No. 5257. Sesbania macrocarpa Muhl. [= S. exaltata] Thickets 3 to 8 ft. h. Fls. yellow, the banner dull white and brownish mottled outside; reddish dotted inside. All parts of fl. glabrous. Tenth stamen free. Plenty 10 ft. h. - Corpus Christi, = Dalea spinosa [illegible] spm. sent by Beggs. doubtless same as Corona de Cristo, "grows in McCoy Wash in rich alluvial soil. Catclaw grows there very large; also Mesquite. I saw two large plants. Was working there digging a well trying to find water. Followed the Mesquite roots down, thinking that I would surely find water. Went down 125 feet but no water. The hole is still there. McCoy Wash is in the McCoy |
