No. 4772. Carpinteria californica. Bot. Gard., Berkeley. Petals mostly 6, often 7, sometimes 8 or 5. Stamens 150 to 200. Flowers at most 2 3/4 inches broad.

Partition walls, counted as follows: i.e. placental plates.

In no case were these walls joined in axis except rarely a little at base_. Of course at very base they are almost necessarily joined.

The placental plates, 2 from the margin of each partition, bear ovules on each side or face.

A _very_ rough sketch but showing the way in which the partition walls project into the centre they approximate more closely than here shown but are quite distinct!! The placentae and ovules fill the "cells" more compactly than shown. -over-
