- There is probably more ill-treatment of animals in the Sierra Nevada by tourists and campers than there is ill-treatment by Teamsters and drivers in San Francisco. So frequently there is no feed for the animals. In the strings of a pack train the animals are frequently snapped together. In going over difficult trails hooked strings suffer. There is a steep pitch going up to Rodgers Lake from Smedberg. The free strings took it nicely, but the tied animals had their heads
