8 Lake Merced [Mariposa Co.] [July 13, 1911] 7200 ft.
Trail to the foot of Echo Creek. It kept us near the rocky river gorge of the Merced and we had fine views of the dome structures of the upper Little Yosemite, the glaciated flats, with the granite dikes or cores over which the stream or river waters was spread out as over an [apron]. There is a fine [shunt] at the foot of Echo Creek with some water wheels on the slide. By this [shunt] of water grew splendid color spots or mats of Penstemon Menziessii (red).
