something of the density of the stand I laid off a plot ten feet square = 100 sq. ft. I counted the seedlings or young saplings as Ryder checked them off. There were 612(!) They ranged in size from 1 to 5 feet in height. None of the dead ones were counted.
In a swale where the saplings were older I noted annual growth in length of the leader to be 4 or 5 feet frequently. One tree in its sixth year grew 13 feet! Another grew 5 ft 2 inches in about its 6th or 7th year.

- Monterey Cypress. The largest and densest part of the grove is near Cypress Point; stretching south to Midway Point and to Pescadero Pt the cypresses decrease gradually in numbers. Near Cypress Point the face the ocean in great numbers rising up to the crest of the low hill. Each branch is flattened horizontally so that the forest of crowns presents an ascending series of stratifications or green terraces rising to the crown of the hill.
