21_60 Rebecca Ranch Grade, Calistoga, Napa County No. 4018. Lithophragma heterophylla Foliage with the odor of fresh cucumbers! Petals with one notch on each side (rarely two.) No. 4019. Giraffe Head. Lamium amplexicaule L. - Trientalis europaea latifolia, very abundant. -Collinsia tinctoria, gives a sort of iodine-like stain to the hands. - Trillium sessile. Only the white fl. [flowered] form in Napa Valley. - Mrs. Hunt. - Arbutus menziesii, in fl. [flower]! - Ceanothus Parryi, in fl. [flower]! |
21_61 March 28, 1910 - Owl's clover properly belongs to Orthocarpus purpurascens says Mrs. Hunt. She sees the figure of an owl's head in the saccate corolla - the galea answering to the horns. - "Wistaria Lupine" = Lupinus latifolius. - Miss Shepherd, painter of oaks, takes her water-colors to Vickery. In particular the Blue oak, altho she did not know it by that name but she knew the foliage was cobalt blue. There ain't no such oak says Vickery. Go back and look at the tree. Then after yielding to despair she saw the review of my book in The Call and wrote to me, sending my answer in triumph to Vickery. At first she was in utter despair, having felt thoroughly crushed by Vickery. - over - |
