Lilium rubescens persists in burns whre it is too dry for it, ie. where its seedlings can not establish themselves during the rains sufficiently to tide over the long dry period. But as the brush grow up again the conditions change and seedlings get a hold. Then another fire. He also brought in to the scheme the beetles whit are killed out by the fire.

Goose-pen trees 4000 to 5000 years old. Cf. Laurel and Black Oak. Some Laurel goose-pens might easily be 4000 to 5000 years old. The case is different from an individual tree. The goose pens have a chance to go on indefinitely. A hundred years is nothing to them. Some of the Balck Oak circles which have gradually [spread] so as to be indistinctly recognizable represent a great age. Compare also the Redwood goose-pens.
