1200 men now in Bureau of Plant industry counting clerks! In 1896 when I was in Wash. I met nearly every botanist. Smith almost alone has refused to be drawn into administrative work. In spite of this continued log-rolling for more money there is no dishonesty. The men are honest and get none of it. It is pulled far to "extend" their work and they have to be continually writing reports to show its importance.

- Vacaville, Sept. '10, Perhaps the wood burns better at Vacaville because it gets so thoroughly dried out at that place in the long hot dry summers whereas at Berkeley the wood holds moisture.
