21_158 Berkeley - Quercus Morehus is near Auburn. - Dr. [Hawver]. - Nee, Luis, the first to publish scientific descriptions of California Trees. - Falling limbs of native oaks. A. G. Pieters has just returned from the Chico [Introd.] Garden. Says Van Vleet showed him a big limb fallen from a Valley Oak (lobata) on a calm hot day. The limb was quite sound or in any event apparently sound. - Phyllospadix, used in fireproofing and deadening between walls in construction of Rudolf Spreckles Physiological Laboratory in 1903. |
21_159 July, 1910. - Torreya Californica, Buck Creek, Middle Fork Kaweah, 6000 ft Miss K. D. Jones. Also in Lake Co, Miss Harmon. - Fog-banks on Vaca Mts. These mts. are opposite inmost tongue of Redwood (on Howell Mt.). About 25 -30 days in the year sea-fog comes in to the top of the Vaca Mts in the morning remaining only a short time. There is a record of this in some previous book about 1904. - Quercus agrifolia Nee. Bridwell, Entomologist, says Live Oaks have been cut off at the trunk and "falled" by carpenter worms, in the country beyond Mills College. Noted lately. Aug. 9, '10. |
