21_12 Pacific Improvement Reserv. than 320 yards from the ocean. This is the furtherest station I found from the ocean. - Cupressus macrocarpa - board branches are I suppose due to the abrupt angles formed by wind-breakage, the shifting of the load of the crown or branch and the filling in of the space in the angle. One of these boards which had such an origin measured 9 ft. 1 in. across it. It averaged about 6 in. thick. This was just at Midway Point. |
21_13 Jan. 9,1910 No 4001. Cupressus govaniana. Narrow grove in middle of Pacific Improvement Company's reservation, on west slope Pt. Pinos ridge, about 1/2 mile below summit. The grove parallels a little barranca (this on the south) which may have helped save it from utter annihilation. The localit is in the midst of the great fire burn which makes such a vast hoe in the forest of Monterey Pine. The cypresses are 4 to 10 feet high; mostly standing very thickly (3 to 6 to the square foot). There are "poles" unbranched, 4 feet high, the upper half with 5 or more clusters of cones, 1 to 6 |
