The spreading base of the Mt. proper, lying above or on a level with lateral ranges is covered with a forest of Tsuga mertensiana pure at this altitude. It forms timber but there are a few trees of Pinus albicaulis just at timber line, i.e. where the forest ends, but they extend in a few scattered colonies above this point forming low mats on the side of the peak itself up to nearly 10,000 ft. - magnificent view of Shasta from summit, Salmon Alps, Weaverville Butte, North Yallo Bally, Mt. Linn, South Yallo Bally. North east any number of low conical peaks, some-

times with craters in their tops.
-Devil's Kitchen, an often described spot, hot mud springs and small geysers, in the bottom of the ca_on, 2 miles above Drakes's house in Hot Springs Valley.
- Lake Tartarus, a remarkable boiling lake 300 yards long, the water so hot that you cannot hold the hand in it. Hot springs on its borders similar to those in the Devil's Kitchen. Plants growing in the hot soil as noted above. Surrounded by forest, the forest descending into rim of crater.
- Below the Mt. Hemlock belt on Lassen (see above) is a distinct Red Fir belt. It has Tsuga
