21_110 Lassen Peak Shasta Co. seeds of Red Fir lying so thickly on the ground that the ground suggested a leaf-strewn place in autumn. The Red Fir seedlings were the most beautiful since they held their wings straight up like the banners of a host. A host that is coming to possess and populate and hold the land. The seedlings were just at the stage for this affect, having gotten out of the ground, straightened up, the arching cots [cotyledons] still holding the seed case aloft by their converged tips. It was a remarkable and interesting sight. |
21_111 June 8, 1910. No. 4091. Ranunculus hartwegi Greene. Wet mountain meadows, lower slopes Lassen Peak. No. 4092. Draba aureola Wats. Pods on some plants nearly full-grown at this time! Only saw this, the next and a red fl. crucifer which I did not collect, on Lassen proper, i.e. above timber line. Growing in the rocks on the broken rocky s.e. slopes. Petals yellow. 9500 ft. No. 4093. Crucifer with preceding. Petals light yellow. Lesquerella Kingi Wats. No. 4094. Viola blanda Wild. V. macloskeyi Lloyd. Pets. clear white, the middle lower petal pink-veined. Moist |
