Big Meadows 4400 ft.

- Olsen says of the twisting of pine, especially Yellow Pine _ that the much twisted pine stands our alone, isolated old trees. Whereas in dense forest they are straight. I notice only twisting from right to left (against the sun) here. See note on June 14.
- Tamrac is used here for fencing and for fuel. It makes very satisfactory fuel, especially in the room of oak, of which there is none here and none nearer than 35 (?) miles they say.
_ It is the Jeffrey Pine var. here.

- Posts in this valley made of Incense Cedar (simply "Cedar" here), last 30 years, some "will last 60 years."
- Butter firkins made of White Fir. Wood has no pitch. At Olsens Ranch (Chester P.O.) they had piled up in the shop what looked like a great stock of wooden buckets, but both ends filled in. The first time, I think, that I had ever seen wooden firkins, at least the empty firkin.
