-Quercus chrysolepis.
The walls of the valley are given more character by this tree than by all other species combined. First of all at the easterly end of the valley has a series of high cliffs, great rocks rising out of the wall, which are remarkable, unlike the rocks of Yosemite for their vegetation. These rocks are set in a mass of oaks which give a character to the rugged strength of the rocks that is very pleasing. Great rocks set in trees, rising
