of the plains begins not far from the river and the soil grows high grain. At the end of the above road we turned to the left, i.e., north, and struck the Sonora road, running across country diagonally, just above Atlanta post office. Crossed at length the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley R.R. at a station of which I did not discover the name. Camped that night at Burnett, within 2 mi. of Oakdale.
- June 28. Went into Oakdale, passing over the Stanislaus River within half-a-mile of the town. Ran across Thompson, '92. Waited here until we sent for money and received it and then, July 1, took the
