1_64 San Bernardino Jones went into Lower California. On the return trip Orcutt and Jones got within a day's journey of San Diego on Saturday night. Jones the next morning proposed to to on. Orcutt, who owned the team, objected, on account of the Sabbath. Jones by force dispossessed him and went on to San Diego -- leaving Orcutt behind. The newspapers made quite a row about the shameful manner in which young Orcutt was treated. This by the way is now a famous story among botanists -- I heard it in a slightly different form from Rose. Parry "took up" Orcutt |
1_65 Jan. 12, 1897. in the first place and encouraged him, believing he had scientific ability. Orcutt was always hard pressed for money. Indulged in the wildest schemes. Advertised in the "Scientist" for collectors -- would pay _100. a month. Even Pringle "bit". Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Lemmon went clear to San Diego only to find out that the collectors were to earn their _100.00 "en route" by soliciting subscriptions to the "Scientist". The Lemmons had little money and the affair was quite disastrous for them. - In New Mexico we can see further and see less, see more cows and less milk, more rivers and less water than any other spot on earth. |
