1_34 - My first paper prepared for printing was "The Botany of the Marysville Buttes". My obligations to Professor E.L. Greene in regard to this were great. He encouraged me; gave me critical help and advice. When I had made the paper ready to send to the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club, Professor Greene looked it over and remarked that it was too neat, the people at New York would remark our superiority or pedantic preciseness. So I dutifully "mussed it up" a bit. This incident puzzled me afterward. The real state of affairs was this, I suspect. The paper had a labored perhaps somewhat raw schoolboy kind of super-neatness; and he wished to hide this a little. |
1_35 (Cont. from p. 24.) the North Fork is actually West Fork as the two forks lie near the main river. When I walked from Walnut Grove to Andrus Island (on which is the Knott place) I had to pass over Georgiana Slough. It would seem as if this might have been "Miller Ferry". At any rate Miller Ferry must be near Walnut Grove. (Dec. 16, 1937). Erythea. We pondered a bit over the naming of the journal, after the first discussion that there should be a journal of botany for Western America. One day I brought in a leaf and the huge inflorescence of Erythea edulis from the Palm Grove. In that day in a tiny hollow alongside Blackberry Creek just above the old greenhouses there was a grove of palms: Washingtonia filifera, Erythea |
