One day thus: "Solomon couldn't have known much about the Polypets: He knew all the plants from the Cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows on the wall. However if we take the Engler and Prantl sequence it would give him a wider range of knowledge. Anyway he couldn't have known anything about the Compositae!" -- Oct. 1896, Cambridge. |
1_189 Cambridge, 1896. - Sir Joseph Hooker, in a letter to Mrs. Gray: "Have finished the Flora of India; am looking about for a new piece of work; friends urge me to write a work on geographical botany; but am reluctant because years since I have allowed my power to read German to slip away from me, "-- etc Illustrates the provincialism of the British. Dr. Robinson said young men he met in London (working on anatomy of plants) made no bones of not reading German!! - Cambridge, Oct. 31, 1896. |
