1_182 Mill Valley, Nov. 7, 1898. - First Circle of Redwoods = 45 x 51 ft, with 45 trees not counting the smaller ones. Circumferences of the larger trees in feet and tenths: 6; 5.3; 4.6; 5.2 Also 14 stumps of previous generation. Stumps far from perfect now. Diameter in feet and tenths: 3.7; 3.8; 3; 2,3 [sic]; 2.3; 3.6; 2; 3; 4.3; 4.1; 4.2; 4.8; 1.9; 2.7. Trunk with hollow centre, one side gone; 3 young trees around it, at 5 ft. from ground circumferences = 8 ft; 9 ft.; 6 ft. Second and third growth in Mill Valley: 30 to 70 ft. high. |
1_183 Vacaville, Dec. 26, 1899. - Quercus lobata in full foliage still, the leaves just falling from the tree at Little Oak. The only expression of lightness or color that I ever observed about this sober stately tree I saw today: the tree at Williams', one of the largest ones, stood out on an afternoon against the dark background of the Jewett grove of Eucalyptus -- almost golden in the cold afternoon light of the winter sun!!! Apples -- Watsonville, _150 to _300 per acre for fruit (owner to till and prune only). Marketed after other apples have disappeared -- keeping qualities -- F. A. Hermann. |
