- Umbellularia californica. Tree of this in Strawberry Canon near bridge, loaded with fruit this year -- great display, never saw the like before! Fruits from Mill Valley, now in my office, brightly colored -- cherry red!! The red of Gov. Wood say, not Tartarian red. Some of course have turned brown! -- Nov. 13. 1898.

- Alnus rhombifolia vs. Alnus rubra. The bounds of the two species. I have never found them together. Remarkably true, yet approaching closely. Alnus rhombifolia is of sheltered watered canons of the dry interior; yet it comes west through the hills from Mt. Diablo to (cont. p. 180)
