-- The Madrone has always made so strong an appeal to my esthetic sense while in the Napa Ranges that I have never looked at the tree botanically in any sufficient way, but I am now doing so -- thus making it no exception.
-- Pleuricospora fimbriolata Gray. Upper bracts with 2 ligulate lobes at base. Lower fls on pedicels 1/2 inch long, upper sessile. Calyx-lobes 5, ciliate;

petals 4; stamens 8. Sepals 1/2 to 3/4 as long as the petals, unequal, the upper carinate.
Another flower: Sepals 4; petals 4, longer than the sepals decidedly; stamens 8, only about as long as pistil (surpassing little). Calyx chorisepalous; corolla choripetalous. -- Hazel Green, 5 July 1897. See p. 86.
