1_154 Berkeley, May, 1899. -- Dr. Albert Kellogg's drawings of oaks are in the Bohemian Club Library -- W.A. Setchell. Doubtless deposited there by Captain James McDonald, who published the "West American Oaks"; a member of the Club. -- Fremont, account of Sac. valley plants, see Expl. Exped. to Calif. 1851, p. 351 et seq. -- cont. from p. 13. According to an original manila label I collected (on June 17, 1891) Scrophularia californica "near Vanden. Point of the Arequipa Hills", for which I later used the old name Pellejo Hills (the hills south of Pigeon Point). (North of and including Pigeon Point = Arequipa Hills). |
1_155 Berkeley, Feb. 1900. -- Juniperus Californica. "Used for fence-posts between San Benito and Bitterwater. Looks like Redwood. Some of them were split" -- Fred. Hermann. -- Surveyor's Marks on Trees. A surveyor marks a tree with 3 blazes on a line running through a tree -- the blazes fore and aft. If a corner falls between three trees they locate the corner, a note in their record a black oak bearing 32 degrees east of n., blaze the same and mark it with an iron stencil, a second tree bearing in another direction, a third in the same way; the corner even if marked |
