1_130 Covelo to Ukiah, Aug 8-10 - Ash, -- Ukiah -- 5.9 ft at 19 ft. - This journey was to us celebrated. We had a sick horse, my own roadster Ganymede. Billy was his mate and Billy was all right, but we walked all the way from Covelo to Geyserville and Skagg's Springs out of humanity for poor Ganymede. One little boy stood at the road side and watched the team go slowly, slowly by, the wheels revolving with painful deliberation, and as we got nearly past the little fellow, he could contain himself no longer and cried out: "Oh, Misters, are you going all the way today?" - Newark. On June 19 or 20, 1897 I went with L.E. Hunt from Niles to Jarvis Landing on a botanizing trip. It is my remembrance we met the Patterson boys (there were two, Henry who came to Univ. Cal., class of 1900, and William who went to Stanford. This morning Dr. Wills, the physician, at the breakfast table at the Club, spoke of this family and their large land holdings at Newark, above Decoto and in the Livermore Hills. The father landed in San Francisco in 1849, without means, went into the Livermore Valley, raised a crop (cont. p. 133) |
