We had to acquire title from several different owners. One day there came word to us that cutting was being done on the property. We found a lessee cutting up the limbs of trees for wood for the S.F. m'k't, removing them from the trees. We appealed to the owner and the destruction was soon stopped and no more did we fear for the trees. Our nursery for new planting was up at the place now occupied by Such's [?] dairy, a tract which the regents sold. [See note written by Dr. Willey at my request in file -- Trees of Cal.]
