18_84 Berkeley - The difficulty of deciding on a suitable term for the so-called flowering parts of pines is now before me. they are certainly not as to the female parts to be called pistillate as Sargent does. The term pistillate tree used to hit Dr. H.H. Behr as being queer and he poked fun at it in his humorous way. 18_85 January 21, 1908. Gabilan Range below Fremonts Peak about 12 miles from Hollister. He was loaded down with some of his office "penates" -- boks horns (from South Africa are they?) -- long straight pointed horns very slightly diverging, and similar "lares". He hasn't found his place here in every way pleasant since his return from S. Africa and has concluded to try the vine business.
