18_78 Berkeley - Dr. Samual Willey said: I have just been down to Monterey again. I want something to read relative to the Monterey Cypress. I suggested it was an interesting tree. Ah, he said, a remarkable tree. Those near the sea show such resistant qualities. (And he drew himself up, 84 years old, but there was a fire in his manner as he raised his clenched hand and showed by gesture how the tree defied the onslaught of the storm.) The younger Willey says Prof Durant had a 10-15 acre orchard of pears, apples, peaches, apricots and cherries from Stiles Hall to Union st. and south.
