- Dr. Samual Willey said: I have just been down to Monterey again. I want something to read relative to the Monterey Cypress. I suggested it was an interesting tree. Ah, he said, a remarkable tree. Those near the sea show such resistant qualities. (And he drew himself up, 84 years old, but there was a fire in his manner as he raised his clenched hand and showed by gesture how the tree defied the onslaught of the storm.)
Dr. Willey planted the original forest of Monterey Cypress and Monterey Pine

and Eucalpytus on the University grounds. The nursery beds were up the canon -- the seedlings being germinated on the grounds. The younger Willey says Prof Durant had a 10-15 acre orchard of pears, apples, peaches, apricots and cherries from Stiles Hall to Union st. and south. The old negro's house on Union and Allston Way was there at that time.
