18_76 Berkeley to the names of the laurel and the live oak. Why, protested they, this is not a live oak! Not like our Live Oak! Said I, you come from near the gulf shore and know the Live Oak of the South. Yes said they. Well this is the difference. The Live Oak of the south makes ship timber. This Live Oak is so poor wood that it will split both ways, crosswise as well as lengthwise! It is so brittle. Indeed, I have seen limbs being broken up for firewood with the back of an axe! |
18_77 January 16, 1908. I collected a good deal in Mississippi. The results appear in my publications of that time. Collected in Washington in early 80's. Greene named one of these plants after me, but have never heard of it since! Always collected whenever I was out in the field. In Missippii it was difficult to dry out my plants. Often had trying times walking with a great bundle on my back. In Portugal I was going out of Lisbon on a journey of 15 miles and my pack slipped and my plants were badly scattered." |
