18_72 Vacaville reproduction. I noticed the shells of acorns about the mouths of squirrel holes. 4.- Quercus Kelloggii, only a few trees in this little range of Arequipa Hills. There is one towards the upper part of Osage Canon, with leaves not deeply lobed, suggesting a bit of Morehus blood maybe. It seems to me now that I remember having collected from a tree in Leadpipe Canon about 1891. 5.- Quercus Wislizenii, the largest tree in the range stands on n. slope towards the head of Hawkins Canon not far from highest point of the Arequipa Hills. |
18_73 Janury 6, 1908 It is 50 feet high, 11 ft. circ. at 4 ft. above ground, 66 ft. diam. crown. It is not a large tree of course save only as it surpasses others of its kind in these hills. Its crown conforms to the slope of the hills. 6.- Quercus lobata goes to very summit of the hills in a small-sized form, being somewhat scraggly like Quercus Douglasii. I was interested in the persistent foliage of some trees. The crown very full for the season. Many of the shoots were evidently recent, i.e. of the last three or four months. |
