18_58 Berkeley, Dec. 13, 1907. - E.P. Sheldon called on me today. He says: Darlingtonia Californica occurs as far north as Coquille Point on the Oregon coast. Dr. W. Hayden says it does not grow north of that point. Dr. Hayden is a grad. of the London College of Physicians and Surgeons and was at the time of leaving England one of the finest surgeons of Britian. He is a remittance man. The trouble with him is booze. He boozes all the while, but he is the only man on that coast who knows anything about plants. (Marshfield P.O.). 18_59 Berkeley, Dec. 13, 1907. Lake near Ash on the Lower Umpqua. Fine large trees 4-5 ft. diam. Picea Breweriana, is on south slope Grizzly Peak, east of Ashland. There is more of it east of the railroad in Jackson county than west of it. Chamacyparis Lawsoniana, the finest body of it is in Coos Co in the sw. corner formed by the bend of the Coquille River. Pseudotsuga taxifolia, the finest body in s.w. Oregon in the n.w. corner of Curry county. Sugar Pine and Incense Cedar, northernmost localities, n. branch of the Santiam River (Mt. Jefferson region).
